The American Halloween tradition of "trick-or-treating" and the dressing of costumes

were both European and Celtic roots. The Celts were the most superstitious people of

ancient times. They believed that evil spirits came to earth during the long winter nights.

So, on the last night before winter, they made bonfires and wore ugly costumes to scare

the evil spirits away.

Modern Halloween is less scary than it was in the past. At Halloween parties there are

prizes for the most beautiful costumes.
